HOW THE AMERICAN/CANADIAN DREAM IS KEEPING YOU BROKE

We have heard a lot about the American Dream so much that it's part of the United States' identity. And lately, we have heard that the American Dream now is turning into the Canadian Dream.

 

But, what the American Dream is? If you google it, there are certainly many different definitions of the American Dream. How people define it depends on their own set of beliefs and experiences. So before we give you a definition, we want to hear from you. How would YOU describe your own American or Canadian Dream?. Let us know in the comments.

HOW TO DEAL WITH OTHER PEOPLE’S OPINIONS

If you are trying to make any improvement in your life, you certainly have received many "pieces of advice" from friends, family and even from random people you don't know.  And yes, most of those opinions are not helpful at all and you didn’t even ask for them. So how can you listen to those opinions without getting off your track or getting all defensive? 

 

This is what we have figured out:

Most people's opinions come from a place of fear

Yes, people have their own issues, their own experiences, their own set of beliefs and most of the advice you will get comes from mainly two fears. The fear that something terrible can happen to you. Or the fear of realizing that they were wrong.

Don’t know how to explain to your kids what a credit card is?

... please don’t tell them that credit cards are evil and let a kid explains to your kids what is a credit card. And just chill out while they learn. 

For our daughter, a credit card is as useful as a knife… but you need to learn how to use it if you don’t want to cut your fingers or end up in debt. Simple as that, no emotional attachments here, they are both tools.

WHY IMMIGRANTS SHOULD GET A CREDIT CARD

Do you want to know how credit cards helped us to reach our financial freedom in a new country? 

I know. Credit cards are scary because of their relationship to debt. But actually, using credit cards can be very beneficial if you want to establish a solid foundation in your new country. Why? Because credit cards help you create a financial history so in the future you can buy your dream home, start a business, etc.

And if you are like us and immigrated to this country in your mid 20s, 30s, or more… you really need to create an excellent credit history fast so you can build that dreamed life you have in mind before you get too old and tired to achieve it. 

Your credit history will show the bank if you are responsible enough to commit to a big debt like a mortgage… they will check your level of debt, if you pay it consistently, if you carry a balance every month, etc. So with this information, they will define how risky you are for them. Here we explain why we don’t like to give allowances and what we do instead

We are not fans of giving kids allowances because giving them money just because it is something that won’t help them build any kind of discipline, responsibility or commitment. Instead, it encourages them to feel entitled to get money without making any effort. And we don’t want that for our kids, right? 

We want to teach them the meaning of work and responsibility. And it’s something that personally worries us because we have the luxury to live in a country where everything seems to be easy to obtain, and even though we don’t want our daughter to have the same struggles we had in our native countries, we don’t want her to get used to a privileged life.
